Captain Disaster the Computer Game is the main home of the Captain Disaster adventure games and related projects by Dave Seaman. The site brings together information on the games themselves, along with screenshots, trailers, walkthroughs, media coverage and occasional side projects. Most of the focus is on comedy adventure gaming, with a mixture of freeware releases, commercial titles and experimental smaller works. No generative AI is used in any of the Captain Disaster games. I do experiment with AI in other contexts, and where I've blogged about these, I clearly indicate this.

Voice test - Corneliustin

Corneliustin was a fun character to write - he's kind of a cross between Stan from Monkey Island and Foghorn Leghorn. When we released the demo which had no voicing, I watched a few playthroughs where the person playing was adding their own voicing - and without exception, everyone voiced him as a Texan, so my writing must have been reasonably successful!

Here you can see - er, hear - Rob McManus with his spot-on interpretation of the character.

(Incidentally the sparks one the faulty control panel affect my first couple of words. It wasn't me doing weird things with my voice!!)

Riskaran Voices

I wish I had a really exciting announcement or update to give you, but really at this stage all I can say is that slowly, steadily, but more slowly than I'd really like, the voice lines for the game are getting recorded, edited and checked.

So... yeah, that's it really. Work progressed, wishlists (hopefully!) increase, and we edge closer to a release candidate. It's true that I've had a few delays with both my own voicing and some cast members, but I think it's fair to say that we're well past the halfway mark now.

Soon I'll post a video or two with multiple characters speaking so you can get a real feel for how the final game is going to be, but in the meantime here's a screen grab of a voice line cut out and ready to go into the game...

Captain Disaster and the Two Worlds of Riskara - three milestones acheived

I'm a big fan of milestones - without them, you can often feel like your projects are going nowhere (and you can apply this to various domains of life, not just specific projects). Er... so, anyway, 3 milestones we've reached for the game recently:

- 150 demo downloads on Itch

- 400 demo downloads on Steam

- 1,000 voice lines both recorded and processed for Captain Disaster (who, as you may image, has far more voice lines in the game than any other character!) For reference, this is slightly over half his voice lines for the game. For all characters, a bit more than half have been recorded and processed.

We're getting there. It feels painfully slow at times, but we are getting there!

New Build!!

Very exciting stuff - received the first build today with almost all voice acting included.  First time I'll be able to hear all the characters together in context - really looking forward to it!

Aaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!! So near and yet...

  • Voiced every line?  Check
  • Edited into individual lines to go into the game?  Check
  • Realised that there was a clever bit of coding to put some random speech lines which weren't picked up by the AGS voice script creation tool?  ... ... ... nah.

Rats.  But, it won't take me too long to sort out, just need to record a smattering of extra lines for 2 characters and code a little extra thingumee to deal with playing the audio as SFX not as speech.  Update soon! :-D

Dark Side talkie version and GP giveaway

Okay folks just to let you know that I have now completed the voicing, just have a bit of file management to do and get someone to do a quick spot of testing and we'll be good to go.

In conjunction with this I'll be running a GoldPieces giveaway, to be able to get your free cryptocurrency you'll need to register at https://playforcrypto.com/ (as they'll be handling the technical side of the giveaway) and download the GP wallet.  Then you will need to put your GP wallet address into playforcrypto.  (It sounds a little convoluted I know, but once you're used to cryptocurrencies in general, it will all be second nature!)

Updates

We're finalising the details of as special pre-order / investment deal for Captain Disaster in Death Has a Million Stomping Boots, along with our sponsor GoldPieces (GP).  Basically, there will be a window of 3 months during which interested parties will be able to pre-order the game and get their name in the credits, plus higher tiers to help us with funding now with the promise of GP per unit sold in the first 3 months after the game's official launch (at this time we have not set a final date on that).  All transactions for this will be made using GP.  This pre-order using crytpocurrency only will be (as far as we are aware) a world first!  Hoping to finish up specific details for a launch during April to June 2016.  [Just to clarify, I'm talking about a launch of the pre-order scheme, not the game itself!]

In other news, I have not fully voiced all other characters for the talkie version of our freeware game Captain Disaster in: The Dark Side of the Moon.  I have done about a third of the Captain's own voice lines.  Hoping to release this within a few weeks - depends how much quiet time I can get to finish off the voice lines (sadly in my house with 2 young children, "quiet time" isn't something that really happens much)...  Perhaps voicing every character myself wasn't the best idea - it seemed like a good one at the time for some reason!

Sounds like a disaster to me...

Want to know what the game will sound like?  I put together a short sampler reel with some of the music and voice acting used in the game, which you can download here.
