It all started in August 1997... well slightly before that, but I can't remember how long. In that month Captain Disaster appeared to the world for the first time - in the first short story featuring him, "The Planet-Eater of Acturus", published in a new small press magazine called Visions. Further episodes came out and were published in Visions, and later elsewhere on the internet, and currently in an eBook collection.
Years passed... after I discovered AGS (Adventure Game Studio), I tried making an adventure game featuring the character. My programming and graphical skills were terrible and the project never got off the ground.
More years passed... I tried again and after a few false starts got a good team together who had the talent to make my game ideas into a real playable game.
Captain Disaster in: Death Has a Million Stomping Boots
Plot Synopsis:
Captain Disaster takes a job delivering a package from Acturus-1 to Proboscis Major - having no idea what's inside it, and a condition of the job is not to ever look inside the package. After dealing with the intensely draconian customs officials on Acturus-1 and several odd aliens, the intrepid captain had to defeat space pirates and convince a planet-eating monster to un-eat a planet before making the delivery - which is when he finds out that, if not stopped, his current employers are about to wreak havoc across the galaxy using the contents of the package he has just delivered along with a lot of sneaky planning... Using all of his wits (such as they are) and his ship's computer (who is helpful... every so often), CD must save the galaxy from a threat no-one knew existed...
Exactly what the million stomping boots are and how they come into it is something you'll have to find out for yourself when you play the game!
Game Details:
- Classic point-and-click adventure gaming action with more inventory items and characters than you could shake even an extra large stick at
- Retro 320x200 resolution graphics
- Fully voiced with possibly the galaxy's first planet-hopping heroic nitwit with a Brummy accent
- Original music score (plus one or two previously released tracks)
- Terrible "Robomusic"!
- Plenty of puzzles to wrap your brain around
- Lots of references to various adventure games, science fiction series, and more
- Loads of daft humour in the true Captain Disaster style, with some references to the short stories
- Planets to explore, bureaucracy to defeat, strange aliens to understand (or not)
Distribution and Release Date Plans:
We will certainly have digital distribution and more than likely a physical release. We do have a publisher set up in principal, but until we're nearer having a completed product there seems little point in shouting about names - it will be announced nearer to the launch date. We are looking to release the game towards the end of 2012, although as we're a new team and other things might interfere, it's impossible to say at this stage whether we're being a bit ambitious with that estimate. Not sure about the price yet but we will aim for something that fairly represents the amount of work that's gone into the game (about £5,000 per copy then... okay okay, it will be something more reasonable I promise you!)
Will we do a Crowd Fundraising Campaign?
It's possible that we will do a Kickstarter / IndieGoGo fundraising campaign for the first Captain Disaster game. At this stage however we just want to get the demo finished, released and see what people thought of it. Various fundraising ideas are being explored but as yet we haven't decided to go down this route.
